8 BIRD CRAFTS FOR KIDS: A FLOCK OF FUN AT HOME

Bird Crafts For Kids

Crafting is more than just a fun way to pass the time; it opens up a whole world of creativity for little ones! Plus, the excitement of making something from scratch helps build fine motor skills and patience (for everyone involved, right?). Art and child development go hand in hand those little minds get to use their imagination to create, connect, and craft in meaningful and engaging ways.

One of my go-to themes for crafting is animals, and bird crafts are always a hit. Not only are there so many different things you can make, but it’s a fun way for your kiddos to learn about birds they may see on walks, in books, or even in the backyard.

Today, I’m sharing some super cute, easy, and sensory-friendly bird crafts for kids. From bird feeders to activity packs, there are endless ways to make learning fun, exciting, and engaging. Let’s get crafting!

8 Bird Crafts For Kids: A Flock of Fun at Home

Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder

I’m all about using household items for crafts there are plenty of recyclable materials we can use to make simple and creative projects! For this activity, we’re using popsicle sticks.

Arrange the popsicle sticks into your desired shape you're essentially creating a shallow, open-top box, but let the kids have fun choosing their design! Glue the sticks together as you lay them and leave them to dry overnight. Once dry, hang the box up outside and fill it with bird seed.

Though not required, have your little one paint the popsicle sticks before starting for a fun, creative touch! They will love watching the birds eat out of something they made.

Paper Plate Bird Nest

Another easy bird craft idea using household items a paper plate bird nest! This activity is a great way to spark conversations about nature and animals, all while building fine motor skills and having fun.

Cut a paper plate in half and glue it to a sheet of paper this will be the base of your nest. Then, have your kids draw a bird “resting” on top of the nest, and add details like the sky, sun, or tree for extra fun. To build the actual nest, glue on brown shredded construction paper, pieces of a cut-up paper bag, or even real twigs if you’re feeling adventurous!

Paper plate crafts are super easy to make. You can add tons of different colors and textures to this paper plate craft project for extra tactile exploration. Score!

Feather Sensory Collage

This activity is great for any age. It’s almost like a sensory bin, but your kiddos create a craft from what they find inside!

Fill a bin with feathers, pom-poms, paper scraps, sensory sequins, colored dry pasta whatever you can think of. Next to the bin, lay out a few pieces of paper and white school glue. Now, let them build their own DIY “bird” using only the stuff they find!

This hands-on activity encourages creative freedom while letting kids explore different textures, colors, and patterns

Toilet Paper Owl

We’re crushing the crafting activities with household items! This craft is super easy to make and even easier for kids to decorate

Take a toilet paper roll and squish the top inward to create owl “ears.” Next, trace wings, eyes, and some feathers on paper and cut them out. For an added tactile experience, switch construction paper out for squishy and soft foam craft sheets! Now, let your kid glue on the pieces to bring their owl to life.

This is a super fun way to practice spatial awareness, which is essential for reading, writing, and even playing sports! The “following instructions” aspect of this activity is also a bonus.

Bird Craft Ideas for Kids

Rainbow Color Activity Pack

On the Mothercould in Your Pocket resource, this Rainbow Colors Activity Pack has an engaging, easy-to-follow printable page where your little one can paint their own parrot how fun!

I love this paper craft specifically because it’s a color-by-number sheet, which encourages concentration and hand-eye coordination, and improves motor skills. Plus, kids love watching their pages come to life as they fill all those open spaces.

Throughout the resource, you’ll find plenty more fun, developmentally beneficial activity packs. These are perfect for everything from arts and crafts time to long car rides!

Handprint Peacock

This peacock activity is one of my favorites when creating bird crafts because it’s so unique and colorful. It also makes for a great keepsake, which we can never have enough of!

Trace your child's handprint onto green construction paper for the “feathers.” Next, trace the peacock body onto a piece of blue construction paper, cut it out, and glue it onto the handprint. For a fun addition, glue feathers on the back of the handprint to really make this craft feel like it’s coming to life! Finally, have your kid use glitter glue and sequins to decorate however they wish.

This peacock craft is a fun way for kids to use their fine motor skills and color recognition to learn about this bold and unique bird.

Paper Bird Garland

Kids love seeing their hard work displayed, which makes this paper bird garland so special. Not only is it a super fun craft, but it doubles as a cute decoration!

Grab a handful of white paper and trace a bird on each one. You don’t want to make them too big just big enough for your little ones to draw on. After you cut them out, hand them over to your kids so they can color them in. You can use acrylic paints, taste-safe paint, markers, crayons, or even dot markers. Once they’re done, glue them onto thread and hang them when dry!

Showing off your kids’ paper birds around your home will build their confidence, which is super important to establish at any age.

Egg Shakers

This craft is seriously the cutest. And, as much as I discuss sensory play on my blog, sound exploration is a super important (and often overlooked) part of it! Let’s turn an ordinary plastic egg into an adorable, interactive baby bird.

Grab some plastic eggs and fill them with bird seed not too much or too little! Next, glue the two halves of the egg together; I recommend using a hot glue gun to keep it secure. Now, let the kids decorate their eggs using felt sheets, googly eyes, and feathers!

This activity works the same way sensory calming bottles do for emotional regulation. A bit more noisy, I’ll admit, but they’re too cute not to make! Alongside the Easter Mini Activity pack, these baby bird egg shakers make the perfect springtime or Easter craft

How To Make Bird Craft Projects Fun For Kids

How To Make Bird Craft Projects Fun For Kids

  • Step 1: Pick a theme. In this case, the overall theme is birds. But what type of bird are you working with? Owls, peacocks, baby chicks? This makes teaching kids about the animal they’re crafting easier!

  • Step 2: Add lots of color. I’ve said this many times before, but the more color you add to a craft, the better! Vibrant colors will keep kids engaged and excited.

  • Step 3: Encourage creativity. Encouraging added colors, textures, and patterns is a fun way to foster creativity. Sure, a peacock is green and blue, but there’s no harm in adding yellow sequins or pink feathers!

  • Step 4: Make it hands-on. If your child is old enough, involve them in the cutting, gluing, and assembling process of the craft! It’s a great way to fully immerse tons of those fine motor skills.

  • Step 5: Teach as you go. I love arts and crafts because although your kids may be learning, they’re having too much fun to realize it! While making crafts, share a few fun facts about the birds they’re creating like the sounds they make or even their habitats.

Bird crafts are an easy way to teach little ones and have fun at the same time!

Bird crafts are a fun and simple way to spark creativity and teach kids about animals and nature! Whether they love the soft crafting feathers, noise of the baby bird egg shakers, or the bright colors on the parrot activity page, each craft will spark imagination and make learning feel like play.
