BABY'S FIRST TASTE SAFE PAINT
TASTE SAFE PAINT RECIPE
You know I love myself some homemade taste safe recipes. They’re safe for little hands, but most importantly, they’re safe for little, sensitive bellies just in case your little one wants to try it. Because we ALL know how hard it can be to keep things out of our little ones’ mouths sometimes! But this recipe holds a very important place in my heart.
Before we get into one of my favorite taste safe recipes, I would LOVE to share a little background on how we created this taste safe paint finger paint recipe. When Nicky was a baby she didn’t like to eat, so making taste safe paint was easy because she wouldn’t try it anyway! I mixed yogurt with food coloring and that was it. She didn’t eat, but she painted well.
Fast forward to Emma who loves food. I made the very same mixture. This time, she was very keen to eat it all. So, I had to adjust the recipe to not make it so tasty, so that it is taste safe if babies try it, but not yummy to eat it all. It’s a VERY fine line!
It makes for the best first paint recipe for babies. Also, great if you run out of paint and have these ingredients on hand, you just whip them out and you have yourself homemade finger paint for a fun painting experience!
However, it is important to remember that just because it’s taste safe, it doesn’t mean your child should be able to eat it all. And you MUST bake the flour at 300 degrees for 10 minutes to make it safer for younger ones in case they taste it. Just wait for it to cool down before preparing the recipe.
INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup salt
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Bake your flour at 300 degrees for 10 minutes to make it safe for younger children.
Once the flour is cooled, mix the flour and salt in a bowl.
Put your water in a bowl and add a few drops of food coloring to the water.
When mixed in, pour the water and food coloring mixture into the flour and salt mixture.
Whip well until the clumps dissolve.
Ta-daa! You have taste safe paint with vibrant colors, just like that!
Tips:
You can add more or less water depending on the consistency you desire.
This paint is easy to store in the refrigerator. It can keep for 6 months or so.
Make sure you test before letting your child begin painting to make sure the cooler and consistency is correct.
You can make a few different colours and let your kid mix them together to make other colors.
What Does Edible Paint Taste Like?
My baby safe paint recipe has a slightly neutral, bland, semi-sweet taste. This type of edible paint isn’t supposed to be yummy as you don’t want to encourage children to eat it. The number one goal is to just make it safe JUST IN CASE your little one ingests some.
To provide a subtle flavor, you can add a tiny pinch of sugar, a little bit of vanilla extract, or other flavorings depending on what your child may like. Overall, the taste is designed to just be complimentary, you really don’t want to encourage your little one to consume loads of it. It is up to you if you would like to add any flavour to your paint.
How to Make Edible Metallic Paint
Edible metallic paint exists, and it is SUPER cool! It is a really fun and popular option for children as it creates a great visual appeal. Typically, you make edible metallic paint with food-grade ingredients such as edible metallic dust or luster dust. To make it, just follow the recipe above and pop in your luster or edible metallic dust towards the end. It makes for really fun sensory play because it makes the paint more visually appealing and really captures the interest of children.
