M&M COLOR EXPERIMENT

M&M EXPERIMENT

This classic experiment never disappoints. I once did it in Nicky’s classroom and all 18 students were stunned (including Nicky who has done it a million times). This is a delicious and mesmerizing activity for your little ones. Have them stack the M&Ms to make different mesmerizing colors and shapes and watch as their little faces fill with amazement as you pour in the water and the colors start to do their magic! Definitely, the most delicious activity we have made so far! I am not gonna lie, I might have eaten some M&Ms in the process.

The shapes are endless, for this one I made classic rainbow, of course, color mixing triangle, color blocking rectangle and a heart. I could watch it allllll day. I sped up the colors spreading, but in reality the circular rainbow took 2.5 minutes to spread completely.

Besides the cool visual effect, I like to use this activity to talk about patterns (what they are and how to make one), color mixing (just make a pattern with two colors and watch them make a new color) and why the colors spread so easily (they are made of colored sugar and sugar dissolves in water quickly). Its a great way to make learning fun!

MATERIALS:

  1. m&m’s

  2. Water (warm water will make it run faster)

  3. White plate

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Make a pattern using the m&ms on the perimeter of the plate. You can make shapes as well.

  1. Add a little bit of water starting in the enter of the shape. Just enough water to fill the plate but not too much that will make the m&ms float.

  2. Watch the colors spread
