But, the magic of fun in learning doesn’t end there. Children can also enjoy artistic expression with alphabet art projects that fuel creativity and self-expression.
There are so many awesome alphabet activities and learning never stops. 10 Fun Ways to Teach the Alphabet
Colorful Rice Letter Find Sensory Bin
This activity is perfect for children who need to learn letter recognition and enhance fine motor skills. It’s pretty simple! You color rice and then fill the bottom of a sensory bin with that rice. Then, kids can use their fingers or a tool to find different 3D letters of the alphabet!
Kids love this letter sensory bin, because it goes beyond just an exciting tactile experience and is suitable for all ages! My favorite part of this activity is that the children don’t even know they’re learning, making it the perfect play-based activity to introduce them to spelling.
Finish the Lowercase Train
I absolutely love this simple yet engaging activity. Featured in my resource, this printable activity helps children differentiate uppercase and lowercase letters with the help of colorful train carts. This one has some of the letters, pre-filled too, making it super beginner-friendly for littles that don’t know their whole way through the alphabet!
For this activity’s instructions, download the Mothercould In Your Pocket resource.
Letter Find Sensory Bag
I LOVE this activity because it is easy, mess-free, and super educational. I made this fun alphabet sensory bag as a letter find game for my little one to help with matching both uppercase and lowercase letters because when she was learning the alphabet. She knew her uppercase letters really well, but the lowercase letters were a little more difficult. Plus, grasping the popsicle stick while searching for letters is a great way to work fine motor skills!
Salt Dye Letter Tray
Here’s one where your toddlers can actually practice making the letters they’ve learned! Die plain table salt one fun color and pour it into a sensory bin or tray. (Something shallow is best.) Then, quiz your child on letters or have them copy the shape from flashcards using their finger or a tool in the sand. This sensory play activity is great for letter-learning and fine motor skills!
Connect the Dots
Surely at one point or another everyone has played connect the dots. It is a super fun and very valued resource in schools around the world because it is so effective at teaching kids new info. With this activity, children can eagerly work to recognize the alphabet and create a picture! For the printout, download the Mothercould In Your Pocket resource!
Letter Posting Box
This kid friendly DIY activity, besides helping kids practice their uppercase and lowercase letters, also helps your little one with many developmental skills. The gesture of picking up the item, opening the lid, putting something inside, and closing the lid is fun in itself and serves for great motor skills practice for both toddlers and babies.
Writing Sensory Bag
When Nicky was 4, this was the activity that transformed her mind and created a lifelong interest in writing! I use this activity almost weekly because it is SO effective, and I even enjoy playing with it sometimes… You just create a colored gel inside a gallon freezer bag, and then you let your little one practice making letters with their fingers in the glittery goo!
Pom Pom Letter Reveal
One of my rules is that if all else fails, add pom poms! Kids love color, and they love colorful fluffy things even more! Plus, pom poms can be reused over and over again, making them very worth the small investment. You’ll use some glue to write a letter, your child will cover the paper in pom poms, and then lift the paper for the magical reveal. The pom poms that stick will show a letter they can discover or practice identifying!
Dot the Letter Activity
This activity is a really cool twist on our Dot the Heart Activity. It is quick and simple, so making it educational makes it that much better. While it is called “Dot the Heart,” you can pretty much dot everything, including letters, making it perfect for letter recognition. It’s much easier than coordinating writing a letter using lines, so it’s perfect for preschoolers itching to learn to read and write!!
Alphabet Scavenger Hunt
Woo hoo! Scavenger hunt time! This activity in my resource is SO super fun and is great for rainy days when venturing outside is not an option. Simply print off the page and tell your little one to bring it around the house and find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Everyone can join in on the fun as you teach them all the letter sounds!
Make learning fun with these alphabet activities!
With these alphabet activities, your kids can develop cognitive skills, social skills, motor skills, and more all while learning letters and having a blast. They are all great ways to teach the alphabet, all with the added excitement of sensory activities, scavenger hunts, and painting.
