AT-HOME REMEDIES TO HELP KICK THE COLD

AT-HOME NATURAL REMEDIES TO HELP KICK THE COLD

Let me start out by saying I'm not one of those people that are into the whole natural medicine thing, but waiting between medicine, at times can get tough haha. Since becoming a mother, I feel like colds and illnesses last longer because I just don't have the time to give myself time to recover. When there is sickness in the household, my little ones HAVE to come first, and they do!

Magically I feel fine during the day but it hits me hard early morning and at night. I remember before having Nicky I would call out sick for at least a couple of days and just lay in bed resting, dealing with the awful side effects. After three days I would be good as new. Now I could be sick for two to three weeks and its normal.

So, with this in mind, I want to share with you a few natural cold and flu remedies that help me get through the long days with my kiddos.

Home Cold Remedies While Pregnant

Lime with Honey

Heat up a little bit of lime with honey in the microwave and drink it with a spoon. I also sometimes boil hot water and add natural mint leaves to make a tea and then add in the lemon with honey. Ginger works as well. Its totally delicious and really helps to soothe a sore throat that comes along with the common cold.

Warm water with salt

For this helpful remedy, all you need to do is mix warm water with salt. Like a lot of salt. At least a teaspoon. Gargle three times every few hours. This really helps calm the throat.

Nasal Strips

I know, I know. They are ugly and usually seen on football players but when you can't breathe out of your nose they are a life saver. I use the Breath Right Nasal Strips to clear up my nasal passages. I usually apply them at night to help me sleep through the night but sometimes during the day also. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and these bad boys really help relieve congested noses.

Cool mist Vaporizer

A cool mist vaporiser can make colds so much easier. Cool mist humidifiers can help to ease coughing and congestion due to a cold. If you’re dealing with a really awful cough, this is a great way to ease it or get rid of it completely.

Take Vitamin C

While this one is less about getting rid of a cold and more about preventing it, vitamin C can really help through the bad cold and flu season. It can even shorten your colds by 1-2 days!

Nasal irrigation

Nasal irrigation is an awesome way to thin mucus in your nasal passages. You essentially flush away and big blockages to bring your smelling abilities back to life! Obviously this one isn’t really suitable for kids, but for moms, it is a literal lifesaver and game changer.

Take a steamy shower

Sometimes, a steamy shower can be all you need to clear a blocked nose and get rid of any congestion. Seriously, they are an absolute lifesaver. It is an awesome natural remedy and can be used as much as needed. The heat from the water and steam are great for opening up airways and loosening any phlegm.

Stay hydrated

While this is less of a remedy and more of just something you should do, staying hydrated is SO important if you want to kick a cold. Staying hydrated can help you avoid dehydration for one. It can also help to relieve headaches, keep you hydrated, and shift any mucus that may be accumulating. This is so important, so don’t forget to keep a bottle of water with you at all times. If possible, add some electrolytes to your water!

Eat Well

Again, much like staying hydrated, this is all about eating all of the right things. Make sure you take in plenty of leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support your immune system while it is compromised. Good nutrition can seriously help you kick a cold that just won’t go away. It’s incredible what eating the right food can do for you!

Black Elderberry Syrup for Cold

You can buy this at Wholefoods or Amazon of course. It secretly lifts your immune system so quick you didn't even know what happened. It doesn't taste that bad either. If you can’t handle the taste but want to reap the benefits, just hold your nose while taking it and you won’t taste a thing! Some water after is just the cherry on top. This is best taken as soon as you experience cold symptoms after you catch a cold.

Get rid of colds quickly with these tips!

The first three home remedies are great for pregnant women and little ones alike. However, the Elderberry Syrup is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. If you’re feeling really unwell, it’s best to speak with your healthcare professional as they can help you kick a cold if the remedies above aren’t working. And don’t gorget to pair them with some delicious chicken soup!

I know the days are long when you're aren't feeling your best but remember that it will pass and better times are ahead. With the tips above, you can say goodbye to colds much quicker and get back to your healthy, cold-free home.
