COLOR MIXING AND SPELLING SENSORY BAG

A few months ago I had an obsession with making sensory bags and I made like a million different ones. A little back story, sensory bags saved my life when my girls were babies. They hated tummy time and so did I. I used sensory bags to entertain them during this time and it made a huge difference.

MATERIALS:

  1. Quart size freezer ziplock bag

  2. Hair gel

  3. Food coloring

  4. Mixing bowls

  5. Optional: Alphabet cards

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Add a bit of hair gel to a bowl. About 3-4 oz. Any cheap hair gel works.

  2. Add a couple drops of food coloring and mix.

  3. Add one color to the bottom of the bag and carefully add the second color on top. You want to be able to mix them when the bag is closed.

  4. Seal the bag leaving little to no air inside.

  5. Have your child mix the colors inside the bag. Then they can practice writing. You can place the prompt card next to it like I show in the video or you can simply say, “can you write the letter A?” Try it and share how it goes!

I like to make sensory bags that are long lasting and putting recycled plastic bags to good use. This serves as a great color mixing experiment for younger toddlers and you can save it to practice writing in the future. Or use with multiple age siblings. One mixes and the other writes!
